Types of Oils & Lubricants

A complete guide by Saquib Bashir Chaudhry — OilGuide.pk

1. Mineral Oil

Mineral oils are made from refined crude oil. They are affordable and commonly used in older vehicles and machines. Best suited for engines without advanced performance requirements, though they may need more frequent oil changes.

2. Synthetic Oil

Synthetic oils are chemically engineered for superior performance. They provide excellent protection in extreme temperatures, reduce engine wear, and extend oil change intervals. Ideal for modern cars, motorcycles, and high-performance engines.

3. Semi-Synthetic (Blended) Oil

A mix of mineral and synthetic oils. Semi-synthetics balance performance and cost, making them suitable for everyday vehicles where budget and performance both matter.

4. High Mileage Oil

Specially formulated for vehicles with more than 75,000 km. Contains additives to reduce leaks, oil burn-off, and improve engine life in older cars and bikes.

5. Diesel Engine Oil

Diesel engines need oils with higher detergents and additives. Look for API ratings like CI-4, CK-4. These oils withstand heavy loads, long distances, and high compression ratios typical in trucks and buses.

6. Motorcycle Oils

Motorcycles often use JASO MA/MA2 certified oils for wet clutch compatibility. Available in both mineral and synthetic grades, depending on the bike type and riding conditions.

7. Industrial Oils

  • Hydraulic Oils (ISO VG 32/46/68): For smooth operation of hydraulic systems in factories and machinery.
  • Gear Oils (GL-4, GL-5): High-pressure lubricants used in gearboxes and differentials.
  • Compressor Oils: Provide stability and reduce deposits in air compressors.
  • Generator Oils: Specially blended for gas and diesel generators to handle continuous operation.

8. Specialty Oils

Includes racing oils, biodegradable lubricants, and food-grade oils for specialized applications.
